Dave”) moved to Humboldt County in the late ‘70s from his home in Louisville, Kentucky. At that time, Dave was in solo guitar/vocal mode in Louisville, which he continued here, playing around the numerous spots in Old Town Eureka in those days. Tomaso’s, Fog’s, The Vance Log Cabin, Old Town Bar & Grill, and other venues in both Eureka and Arcata kept him busy as much as 7 nights a week. In the mid-‘80s, Dave joined up in one of the area’s most working country bands – “Country Fever”, where he stayed for several years before forming his own bands – “Dave Trabue & The Roundup Band”, followed by “Still Kickin’.” After moving away in the late ‘90s, and playing in the SF Bay Area for a long while, Dave returned to Humboldt in 2022 and is working to get his Covid-atrophied chops back in shape to entertain you again & is very happy to have a chance to return to the Folklife Festival in its new (to him) digs, as he used to play at the old Fickle Hill location. The repertoire consists of bluegrass standards and fiddle tunes with acoustic stringed instruments and tight vocal harmonies. The Moonstone Ramblers embody the spirit of the California bluegrass community, with each member trading off singing lead and harmonies. Though they officially formed as a band recently, most of the members have been playing music and singing in various bands for a long time. He got his start playing the blues and old style rock n roll in San Bernardino in the mid 60’s. Buddy, from Rialto California, is the real deal, raw, emotional, and energetic. He came up alongside George “Harmonica” Smith and Rod Piazza, in the band Bacon Fat. Working with George and Bacon Fat he backed up such venerated artists as Lightning Hopkins, J.B.Hutto, Pee Wee Crayton, and Big Mama “Willie Mae Hound Dog” Thornton, and many others. The band was“discovered” by Blue Horizon Records’ Mike Vernon and recorded several albums in London and Los Angeles including their seminal album “Grease One For Me”. Bacon Fat toured nationally and overseas with George Smith and Big Mama. Since that time Buddy has shared the stage with a long list of the best old line blues artists. Buddy was hired by Little Richard to be a member of his touring band. After more than a year on the road with Richard, Buddy left and spent several years in Michigan and Ohio playing with the Brooklyn Blues Bombers and the Muskadine Blues Band before moving back to California to forge his own path and front his own band in the mid 70s, the Rockets with drummer Richard Innes and then th’ Rip it Ups featuring Bob Corritore early in his career. He hasbacked up or shared the stage with Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Howlin’ Wolf, T Bone Walker, Willie Dixon, James Cotton, Buddy Guy, RL Burnside, James Harmon, Bob Corritore, Mark Hummel, and many, many more, Working as a trio and occasionally adding harp, Buddy toured the saloons, roadhouses, and venues across the West based out of Riverside/San Bernardino, Phoenix, and now Arcata, California. Buddy is a member of the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame and was recognized by the State of California and the County of Los Angeles for his contributions to the development of the “West Coast” blues style.
